Welcome to The Piano Nook, a private piano studio based out of my home in Greenville, SC. I offer private piano lessons that emphasize classic technique & repertoire, and enhance the private lesson experience with monthly studio nights where we meet as a group to practice performance and explore music history, theory, and improvisation skills.
My musical background includes a degree in piano pedagogy from Bob Jones University, prefaced by 12 years of classical instruction, one of those years focusing heavily on hymn improvisation. One of my favorite things to do with piano is to accompany singers.
The Piano Nook is a good choice for you if you are self-motivated to work on piano as a creative outlet. I am most satisfied when my students enjoy what they are accomplishing for themselves. That might mean winning a competition, performing a piece for Grandma, or contributing to the music ministry at church. Whatever your goals are, I will help you meet them.
The Piano Nook is also a good choice for you if you align with my teaching philosophy. If you are looking for a guide to help navigate technique, ear training, terminology, theory, interpretation, repertoire, etc., I will help you navigate all of that while also teaching you to become your own guide so that you can eventually continue your learning journey on your own. I accomplish this through a good musical and technical foundation through studying a variety of musical styles and mastering technical exercises, among other methods. My role is not to enforce disciplined practice or inspire external motivation; I work best with students who are already motivated to learn and practice. If you're looking for a prize box for incentivizing practice, I don't have one, but I do hand out compliments (and occasionally stickers) for a job well done.
My overarching goal is to teach people to be functional pianists who can play with excellence so that they can enjoy creating and sharing music freely. If that's you, I would love to talk!
